The Guardian say Arsene Wenger made up his mind some time ago that he would make a commanding centre-back his priority in the transfer market this summer, after apparently losing faith in the Vermaelen-Mertesacker partnership this season.
Arsenal started strongly, conceding just two goals in their first five games, but have found themselves with the same old problems at the back as the season has gone on.
The article claims that Swansea City’s Ashley Williams is the top of Wenger’s list. The Swans skipper has just guided his team to glory in the League Cup and has impressed at the Liberty Stadium this season.
Liverpool are also interested in Williams, as former Swansea boss Brendan Rodgers is keen to link up with his old player again. He also has to make plans in defence as he looks set to lose Jamie Carragher at the end of the season, after the Liverpool veteran announced earlier in the season that he would be retiring this summer.
Hopefully Arsenal will make a serious offer for Williams, as he seems the ideal candidate to come in and add some leadership to our backline, but competition from Liverpool and Rodgers might be hard to fight off.
