Sunderland goalkeeper Simon Mignolet says he is ignoring speculation linking him to Arsenal and Manchester United, and is just focussing on maintaining his strong recent form.
The Belgian shot stopper has emerged as a target for the two clubs who are unsure over the long-term reliability of Wojciech Szczesny and David de Gea, who have struggled for consistency over the last couple of seasons.
However, speaking to the Sun, Mignolet is aware that any high profile error would see the speculation immediately die down. He said:
I try to say to people who ask me about being linked with other clubs that it goes in one ear and out of the other.
“That is what you are going to get as a footballer. Sometimes you are a hero and sometimes you are in the eye of a storm — things change quickly.
“The only thing I can do is focus on my own game. All those clubs I am linked with, if I make a mistake on Saturday, I will be un- linked straight away. It will be the exact opposite and that’s why I don’t really get fussed about it.”
Mignolet is a good player and will probably be one of many ‘keepers linked with us over the coming months. I’d certainly hope we’re serious about improving on Szczesny this summer, but we’ll see.
