Arsenal send scouts to watch Gonalons

The Daily Mail have a brief piece saying that Arsenal are looking into the signing of Lyon midfielder Maxime Gonalons.

Although the article goes into next to no detail at all on the deal, they claim to know that Arsenal sent scouts to watch Lyon’s game on Sunday, when they beat Bordeaux 4-0.

While in theory Arsenal could be simply sending scouts to this game as well as many others around the world, it is thought that the defensive midfielder was their main focus on this occasion.

Arsenal were linked several times with Mohamed Diame over the last few months in a bid to bolster their midfield, which has been weakened since the summer sale of Alex Song to Barcelona, as well as repeated injury worries with Abou Diaby, Mikel Arteta and Jack Wilshere.

As far as I’m concerned, that’s probably the only thing that links this rumour together. We had scouts at a Lyon game, Gonalons is an impressive defensive midfielder in the mould that we need, and the Mail have put two and two together.

Arsene Wenger often looks to Ligue 1 to find players, but there’s little to suggest there’s a great deal more in this story than any of the rumours that go around.
