According to the Spanish website Mundo Deportivo Barcelona will demand €20m for the transfer of David Villa, a price reported to be around twice what Arsenal are prepared to pay for the Spanish striker.
Villa, who has just been readmitted to hospital following persistent pain from kidney stones, is believed to still be on Arsene Wenger’s wishlist despite being unable to land the player during the January transfer window.
€20m seems excessive for a player who, come the summer, will only have one year left on his contract and will be 31 and no longer first choice with his club.
Mundo do not disclose how they know this is the price that Barcelona are looking but it would seem that Barcelona, after years of raiding Arsenal at will, are determined to make it as difficult as possible for Arsenal to sign the player.
There is no way that Arsene Wenger would consider paying this sort of money for a player of Villa’s age and contract status so something will have to give if Arsenal still wish to land the player and this price is accurate.
Villa is believed to want to leave Barcelona in search of a regular starting spot with the World Cup coming up in 2014 and has been said by numerous outlets to be keen on a move to Arsenal.
