Aston Villa boss Paul Lambert says interested clubs will have to pay big money to sign Christian Benteke this summer, with the Belgian striker enjoying a hugely impressive first season in the Premier League.
The forward moved to Villa Park from Genk at the start of the season and has scored 14 goals in England. Arsenal are now thought to be one of many clubs interested in recruiting him next year.
The likes of Chelsea, Manchester City and Atletico Madrid have also been mentioned as potential suitors. However, Lambert believes his player is happy at Villa, despite the relegation battle that lies ahead for them.
“If that’s the whispers coming back then it’s funny because he doesn’t speak! So I’ve not heard it. He’s a cracking big guy and really humble. If he keeps that he could be anything he wants to be.
“He’s not just going to walk out of here for the value he came for, that’s for sure. Has he doubled his value? Yes, by miles.”
An article in the Metro says that a bid of £16million should be enough to sign Benteke, and that even if Villa manage to fight the drop this season, he will consider his future if a bigger club shows interest.
Rumours about players who are impressing are always common, and it’s hard to know how much Arsenal’s interest is more concrete than any other clubs. If Arsene Wenger still feels his strikeforce needs a boost in the summer, then Benteke could be a good option for him.
