Before looking at the article from last night – it’s worth having a look at what Capoue’s representative Mino Raiola had to say in an interview with L’equipe speaking just after the transfer window closed
“Paris St Germain wanted him too, but that may be for the summer. We will see what happens in the future”
“I know Toulouse chairman Olivier Sadran was not keen to sell during the winter window.”
“The fee demanded was a barrier on each occasion, but we held some polite talks.”
Twitter was awash with rumours on deadline day that Wenger was looking at a holding midfielder. Wenger looking at a holding midfielder that could also fill in at centre half though is a move that makes a lot of sense – especially given the fact that Song was never properly replaced in the summer and that Djourou and Squeakylacci have essentially left the club. Sissoko leaving Toulouse (for Newcastle) in January would certainly have meant that Toulouse were less willing to let a similar player (in Capoue) leave in January – so in theory there could well be a lot of truth in a summer move for the player. We know that we were interested and we know (and Wenger knows) that he is the type of player we need.
We also know though that we are very unlikely to be the only club looking at him…..so agreeing a move early (like we did with Podolski) could well be something that Arsenal look to do. Or – every part of the story linking him with us could be utter coincidence……Only time will tell. But with this story I’d suggest that there is no smoke without fire. It will be interesting to see how this one develops…..
