The Metro reported yesterday that Atletico Madrid will rival Arsenal for the signature of Spanish forward David Villa in the summer if (as widely expected) Atletico sell star front man Radamel Falcao to a club funded by oil. Villa is apparently very keen to stay in La Liga – especially now that he has become a father for the 3rd time .
Just before we carry on with this part of the story though we need to look at something else briefly – you might have seen reports a few days ago (or are you beginning to avoid anything that involves talk of David Villa and Arsenal?) saying that Villa had already decided to join Arsenal in the summer. This connect the dots story links to reports in the Spanish media who then say that their source for this story is (wait for it) The Sun - who in their story mention nothing that hasnt previously been reported and in the report the word “January” has simply been replaced with the word “Summer”. So there is no source for any of it. No quotes. No weight behind the story.
So if we completely ignore that information and look at the facts we see a clearer picture. Villa wants to leave Barcelona as he isnt playing. Atletico will sell Falcao should the correct offer materialise (which I’m sure that it will) and as Villa is a new father – he is going to be very unlikely to want to uproot his family to move to a different country. Correct me if I’m wrong but I’m also sure that at no point Villa has publically said (the press have reported that he wants to leave) that he wants to join Arsenal. We know that Arsenal were interested but will we still be interested in the summer when other players become available?
If (please note the if) Atletico Madrid look to Villa as a replacement for Falcao – there wont be a competition with Arsenal for his signature. We wont fight for him – it was even mentioned yesterday that we arent even planning on moving for him. He might well have been our deadline day “nearly” signing. He might not have been. But we will have other targets – and I’d suggest that the other forward we were linked with on deadline day will be a very serious contender.
