Gerrard has sympathy for Wilshere

England and Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has praised Arsenal youngster Jack Wilshere, and admits he felt a great deal of sympathy for him during his lengthy spell out injured.

Wilshere made his breakthrough for Arsenal and England in the 2010/11 season, establishing himself as first choice for both club and country, but missed the entire of the next campaign out with injury. The 21-year-old made his comeback for the Gunners this season and is now set to return to international duty as well.

Gerrard is pleased to have Wilshere back, and says he knows how it feels to miss so much football with injury problems.

Speaking on the Sport Review, he said:

“If Jack Wilshere stays fit he has the capacity to be a top player for England and for Arsenal. The manager, myself and all the other players in the dressing room are excited to have him back.

“He has had a very disappointing time with injuries, and I felt for him because I have been there myself. Fingers crossed that he can avoid injuries in future, and can get a run of games.”
