Stoke City goalkeeper Asmir Begovic does not expect to be at the club beyond the summer, following their signing of promising young ‘keeper Jack Butland from Birmingham.
The Bosnian had been linked with a few top clubs this January, including Arsenal, but a move never materialised. However, he seems certain that his long-term future does not lie at Stoke.
According to Sky Sports, Begovic told Bosnian press:
“I haven’t decided on anything. I didn’t say yes or no to anybody. I haven’t signed anything – no contract, no pre-contract. But I believe that Stoke didn’t buy Butland to be a reserve so I think I’m going to be sold in the summer.
“To whom? I can’t move to a smaller club and I also know that some top clubs are interested in me. They are also the only ones who can afford the fee.
“Now I’m just happy that January is over. It was a hard month for us, so many rumours. Now, we can focus on our games again.”
If Arsenal renew their interest in the highly-rated shot-stopper, they will reportedly face competition from Manchester United and Manchester City, which will no doubt drive the fee up higher than they might like. But with some inconsistent displays from Szczesny this season it will be interesting to see if Arsene Wenger makes a goalkeeper his top target in the summer.
