The Mirror have taken a single quote from Arsene Wenger somewhat out of context to suggest he is planning to sign a left-back today, but I’m pretty sure he isn’t.
The boss was questioned after last night’s 2-2 draw with Liverpool, which saw Kieran Gibbs limp off to be replaced by the unreliable Andre Santos at left-back. In his press conference, he said Gibbs would be out for three weeks, which prompted questions about whether Wenger would be happy to have Santos as backup or if he will look for a replacement.
The Mirror article ran the quote:
“I’ll see what I can do. It is a thigh strain and that rules him out for the next three weeks. Of course it is a big blow because Gibbs was a big player for us going forward and in the game we want to play it is a shame he is out for three weeks.”
Never mind the fact that it’s only one line at the beginning, hardly promising anything – having actually watched the press conference myself, Wenger clearly said semi-jokingly, adding the word “overnight” as if to emphasise how little time he had to make a signing even if he wanted to.
I’m not sure who he’d find now, but expect us to be linked again with Luke Shaw, Leighton Baines, Wayne Bridge and every other left-back on the planet. I’d like us to not have to rely on Santos, but the reality is Wenger should have prepared for this at the start of the month, because with Gibbs’ injury record it was always a big possibility. Santos is such a bad player it feels like it could now have a huge effect on our season.
