Fulham manager Martin Jol has more or less announced the signing of AC Milan left winger Urby Emanuelson on loan for the rest of the season. The player had been linked with Arsenal earlier this month.
BBC Sport confirmed the story last night, with Jol saying:
“He can play left midfield, wide, play number 10, [and] I feel we need fresh legs. I coached him at Ajax. He is a skilful player, very agile. He is very mobile and quick.”
What he doesn’t say is that he can also play left-back – a position Arsenal might need now after losing Kieran Gibbs to injury for three weeks in last night’s game against Liverpool. With Andre Santos the only option in that position now, a loan move for someone like Emanuelson might have been an ideal solution to the problem.
All words coming from Arsene Wenger suggest he will not be signing anyone today, so perhaps we shouldn’t be surprised. Anyway, it is only a loan move and perhaps Emanuelson will still be available in the summer when we have more time to shift Santos and sort out our squad. Let’s see how he does in the Premier League for now.
He will join Arsenal midfielder Emmanuel Frimpong, also on loan for the rest of the season at Craven Cottage.
