The Daily Mail last night linked us with two midfielders, one attacking and one defensive, in the shape of Victor Wanyama and Yoann Gourcuff.
The pair have been linked with the club before, both fairly recently. Wanyama, who has impressed a great deal at Celtic, was first linked with Arsenal over the summer when we were looking at Yann M’Vila and other possible replacements for Barcelona-bound Alex Song.
As it has become increasingly clear that Arsene Wenger needs more options in midfield due to the injury-prone nature of Abou Diaby and additional problems with Mikel Arteta, one would hope there’s some truth to the renewed Wanyama interest. However, this article doesn’t go into much depth or quote any sources, so perhaps it is simply recycling something of an old story.
Gourcuff has been linked with Arsenal many times over his disappointing career. Despite having a great deal of potential, the Lyon man has struggled to fulfill his promise due to problems with his attitude. It has been thought that Wenger would be interested in helping get the best out of the French attacker, but a move has never materialised.
The article claims Lyon would like to send Gourcuff out on loan, which could tempt Wenger as it doesn’t commit him to anything. However, once again it does not quote any sources and could be making something out of nothing. Just because Lyon want rid of the player, doesn’t mean Arsenal are automatically interested.
