It didn’t take long for what Wenger said to get twisted and now one or two Italian websites are reporting that he said
My banker knows that I want to bring Cavani to London
When in fact all Wenger said was that he liked Cavani and that his banker was ready if he wanted to sign someone. I paraphrase, of course, you’ve all read the statements, you know he didn’t say what is now being reported.
Lost in translation perhaps.
Anyway, Napoli have responded, whether to the actual quotes by Wenger or to these new ones, I am not sure and the president of the Italian club, Aurelio De Laurentiis, has said
I do not need any of his money.
I trust in the professionalism of Cavani. From us, he is the king of the city.
I do not think other parties would be able to identify themselves in this way.
I haven’t seen the press conference or the interview where these quotes were offered but if it’s anything like the way it works in England, De Laurentiis will have been asked about Cavani and told the press that he doesn’t need to sell him, that the club doesn’t need the money, and this is how it has been interpreted by the press.
Of course, it is not clear is Arsenal have actually made a move for Edinson Cavani, if they plan to, or if it is merely a smokescreen hiding their real intentions.
