The Metro have picked up a story from Italian press claiming that Roma are keen to offload Maarten Stekelenburg in the coming days, with Arsenal and Fulham the interested parties.
The Dutch goalkeeper, who has been linked with the Gunners before in his Ajax days, seems to have fallen out of favour at the Stadio Olimpico, and has been offered to Arsenal and Fulham for a pretty low £3.5million.
Arsene Wenger is rumoured to be looking at a goalkeeper to challenge Wojciech Szczesny for the number 1 spot, and the likes of Asmir Begovic and Ali Al Habsi have been linked to the club in recent months.
Szczesny came under some criticism for his form towards the end of last season, culminating in a disasterous performance for Poland in Euro 2012. He spent some time out of the team with injury in the early months of this campaign, with Vito Mannone putting in some mixed displays if we’re being kind. It certainly isn’t unreasonable to think a new goalkeeper could be a relatively high priority for the boss.
Stekelenburg obviously has quality, but you have to wonder if he isn’t a spent force if Roma are so keen to get rid of him. Perhaps a club like Fulham would be a good move for him but the press are keen to play up an interest from Arsenal to add spice to the story.
