It seems as if a rumour doesn’t pan out the first time the best thing to do if you’re a national newspaper is to rehash it again and see if you can get any joy with it later on down the line and that seems to be exactly what The Mirror are doing with their ‘Fulham want Arshavin’ story.
Back in November Fulham’s manager Martin Jol responded about the links with Arshavin and whether he would bid for him in January by saying
But today the Mirror claim that he has made a ‘fresh’ inquiry for the Russian who has just six months left on his Arsenal contract and will be able to leave for free in the summer. I’m pretty sure to make a ‘fresh’ approach you need to have made an old one first.
There is no doubting that Arshavin’s time at Arsenal seems to be up and that the club are more than willing to let him go. Are Fulham actually interested in him? It doesn’t seem like they are, but hey, let’s not stop facts getting in the way of a story eh?
As if that wasn’t enough they also claim that Reading are still interested in the player despite manager Brian McDermott having said recently
At this time of year you hear lots of rumours – and I have heard that one.
But I don’t think so.
If we could bring in two or three players that could make a difference, it would be useful to the squad. We don’t generally deal in big prices. We try to get players that are available.
I’d like to bring in two or three with a little bit of experience at the level.
Round and round and round we go, where we stop, nobody knows.
