The Sunday Mirror claim that Arsenal are lining up an offer of £8million for Wigan Athletic midfielder James McCarthy.
The Republic of Ireland international is also wanted by Liverpool and Everton, but Roberto Martinez is determined to hold onto one of his best players until the end of the season, as his side face their inevitable fight against relegation from the Premier League.
This story has appeared before, and with Arsenal widely regarded to be chasing a midfielder to deal with the injury absences of Abou Diaby and Tomas Rosicky. Although stories of a bid might be premature and played up to sell a story, there is a decent chance that Arsenal’s interest in the Wigan man is genuine.
Latics boss Martinez has got Wigan playing a decent brand of football not so dissimilar from our own, and so Wenger might see something in signing a midfielder from there as the move to our system would not be such a big change.
However, even with their attacking philosophy Wigan have struggled for results in recent years, always narrowly avoiding relegation. Could we maybe do better and find a player with more experience of playing at a higher level?
