Casillas to Arsenal rumour spreads despite being total nonsense

When perusing the Spanish press I was very surprised to see a report in Marca which was linking Arsenal with a move for Real Madrid’s goalkeeper Iker Casillas. My surprise didn’t last long when I saw that they were quoting as their source Fanatix, that site which has a reputation for being even less reliable than Goal.com. I don’t think it’s a huge stretch for me to say that the rumour is completely and utterly fabricated.

At least it wasn’t from an ‘in the know’ Twitter account eh?

There is absolutely nothing to suggest that Casillas would be seeking to move from Madrid, even if he has found himself on the bench for a couple of matches. Then there’s Arsenal interest which seems to have been fabricated based on nothing more than the belief that Arsenal are believed to be looking for a goalkeeper.

As this is being reported in the Spanish media I expect it to make its way in to the British press over the next few days. When you read it you can remember where it originated and get a true feel for the level to which many of the tabloids in this country will stoop to fill their pages.

Why am I covering it you might ask? For the same reason we cover most of the rumours that are out there, to highlight them for the nonsense they are so that you can be aware of it when you come across them in the ‘legitimate’ press. My money is on the Daily Mail going first.
