According to the Sunday People today, Arsene Wenger has phoned David Villa in order to persuade the player to join Arsenal.
Now, I don’t know about you but the first thing that comes in to my head is ‘phone-tapping’ because how else would they know exactly who Arsene Wenger is calling?
I kid. Sort of. There are, of course, no sources to back up this claim, but the personal touch is something Arsene has used in the past – Aaron Ramsey perhaps being the most well-known example in order to stop the player deciding to go to Manchester United.
I’m also pretty sure that this would fall under the category of ‘tapping up’ and despite the fact that this sort of thing goes on all the time between all clubs, that doesn’t mean it’s right.
Of course, I want to see David Villa arrive at Arsenal as much as anyone but that doesn’t mean this story has any truth to it.
The story continues that Arsenal will wait until the summer to sign Villa should that be the only option available.
If the press are to be believed [ha!] the only thing stopping Villa joining Arsenal is Barcelona’s reluctance to sell as the player himself is not only happy to move to Arsenal, he’s ready to plead to be allowed to do so.
