He might have overseen one of the best Olympic Games ever but Neale Coleman, who was director of the 2012 games and who has been honoured with a CBE from the Queen, says that the memories made this summer still don’t eclipse those of watching Michael Thomas win the league for Arsenal at Anfield in 1989.
Speaking in the Islington Gazette, Coleman said
“I was fortunate enough to be in the Olympic Stadium the night Mo Farah won the 5,000 metres.
“The only better sporting occasion that I’ve witnessed was when I was lucky enough to be at Anfield, to see Michael Thomas win the league for Arsenal in 1989.”
Coleman, who lives in Highbury, is just one of many Gooners who came together to help make the Games such a success and it is fitting that Mo Farrah makes it in as number two on Neale’s list of all-time great sporting occasions.
But, as all Arsenal fans know, it doesn’t matter how great the Games were, Arsenal winning is always better.
