Arsenal have reportedly agreed a fee of £3million for little-known Kansas City forward C.J Sapong, according to thefootballmagazine.com.
The 24-year-old was voted rookie of the year in the MLS in 2011, and is said to combine great pace with height and physical presence. However, his goals record is poor for a striker, with just 6 goals in 25 league games last year, and 5 in 34 the previous.
Perhaps I don’t follow the MLS closely enough, but I’ve never heard of this player and it seems a rather bizarre move. The US seems to be where fading stars like David Beckham and Thierry Henry go to play out the final few years of their careers. It is a much lower level than European football, and you don’t exactly see young players developing there and moving to bigger clubs very often.
This website doesn’t seem to quote any source, and it’s hard to know how reliable they are, but this seems very much like a tall tale. Even for only £3million, one feels Arsene Wenger could find someone better for that kind of money in Europe.
