Holtby confirmed to be leaving Schalke

Lewis Holtby

Arsenal target Lewis Holtby will not renew his contract with Schalke, and will be leaving the club either in January or at the end of the season, the club have confirmed.

The German international, who has an English father, is reportedly keen on a move to the Premier League, and has been linked with Liverpool and Arsenal, as well as his boyhood club Everton.

The Daily Mail reports that Schalke board member Horst Heldt wished Holtby well for the future, but conceded that it was not with the Bundesliga outfit.

He said:

“We had hoped Lewis saw his future at Schalke beyond the end of this season, but he has made a personal decision that we respect.”

It is not yet clear if the interested clubs will make bids for the midfielder now, or wait until the summer when they can sign him on a free transfer. It is of course also hard to know how real Arsenal’s interest is, or if our name has been thrown in because Holtby impressed in Schalke’s matches against us in the Champions League this season. It is not a position we desperately need to strengthen, but on a free he would certainly add some competition to the attacking midfield places.
