Former Arsenal midfielder Alex Song has praised Arsene Wenger for his fine work in developing players, saying he would never have made it to a club of Barcelona’s size if not for his old manager.
Wenger brought Song to Highbury from Bastia in 2005, and stuck with the youngster through some uncertain displays. Song eventually became a key player for the Gunners before moving to the Nou Camp this summer.
Wenger has received criticism in recent times for failing to win silverware for the club, but Song believes his old boss will turn things around with time.
Speaking to L’Equipe, and reported in Sport Witness, Song said:
“I have spent years learning with him… I am in Barcelona, and it is thanks to Arsene. Nobody took a risk on me when I was in Bastia. He believed in me, I thank him, and look what he has built with Arsenal! I know from when I was seventeen years old, he educates me. I have lived with him daily. He will succeed and recover the club.”
Song failing to understand there that it’s the desire of players like him to move onto ‘bigger’ clubs, once Wenger has developed them out of nothing for years, that continues to be part of the reason Arsenal keep missing out on trophies.
