He’s off to Arsenal. No Liverpool. No Arsenal. No Liverpool. The player wants Arsenal. His manager wants Liverpool. Loan. Buy. Loan. Buy. Loan. Going. Staying. Agghhh.
There has been much tooing and frooing with the Sahin transfer deal over the summer so here, if you missed it, is how it has unfolded so far:
Reports first surfaced in July that Arsenal were looking to take Real Madrid’s Turkish midfielder Nuri Sahin on loan. Very quickly, Spanish media outlets reported that a loan deal had been agreed then this was denied then they reported that it had, indeed been agreed (July 27th). Later that day Wenger himself spoke about the Sahin deal saying nothing had been agreed.
On July 28th it was being reported that Sahin didn’t want a move to the Premier League and wanted to stay with Real, then later that day, La Liga expert Sid Lowe said he expected Sahin to join Arsenal.
July 29th and Madrid paper Marca claimed that Arsenal’s loan offer for Sahin was to be studied.
We then had a few days of relative quiet before AS popped up and claimed that negotiations with both Arsenal and Galatasaray were at an advanced stage (August 3rd).
August 4th and now Manchester United are being linked with the player but later that day the same paper claimed the deal to bring the player to Arsenal was almost complete.
August 6th and Sahin plays in Real Madrid’s friendly in the US.
On August 7th Liverpool enter the race to sign the player.
Another few days of quiet and then on August 10th, Turkish Football, who were amongst the first to bring us news of Arsenal’s interest, claim there will be a decision at the weekend.
On to August 13th and the Spanish press claim that a deal will be done with Arsenal this week despite the interest being shown by Liverpool.
August 15th and the press start to say that Sahin wants to move to Arsenal while his manager, Jose Mourinho wants him to join his former colleague Brendan Rodgers at Liverpool.
August 17th and we’re told there won’t be a decision until next week as both Arsenal and Liverpool bid for the player.
August 19th and Nuri Sahin is left out of Real Madrid’s squad as his move away gets closer.
Later the same day the BBC claim that Arsenal are close to completing the deal.
August 21st and AS report that the deal to bring Sahin to Arsenal has been completed and all that is left is official confirmation from the two clubs.
The next day, August 22nd, AS report that the deal does include an option to buy the player at the end of his loan spell, information gathered from the Daily Mail.
On August 22nd, despite internet claims that the player is in London, Sahin is training with Real Madrid.
August 23rd and Marca claim that the deal to bring the player to Arsenal has fallen through because of Arsenal’s insistence on an option to buy and the player is now Anfield-bound despite only 24 hours earlier claiming that his bags were packed and he was heading to London.
Where it goes from here, I haven’t got a clue.
[UPDATE: It went to Germany, where the German division of Sky Sports claimed we had signed him and he'd completed his medical.]
