The Mirror do love a good Arsenal story, not a day goes by when they don’t link us with a new player it seems and the latest to come on to their radar is Ajax’s Gregory van der Wiel.
According to the paper the player wants to move to Arsenal (how they know this they don’t say as they give no quotes nor sources) and it would cost Arsenal £7m to obtain his services (again, no source or quotes).
Van der Wiel has only one year left on his contract and Ajax, they say, are keen to cash in on the player (yep, you guessed it, no sources nor quotes). The player has been with Ajax since 1996 apart from a three year spell between 2002 and 2005 when he was at Haarlem and is a highly regarded player, there’s no doubt about that. He’s also a right back which is perhaps not the most pressing position in need of a replacement in Arsenal’s side. Ajax also lost Jan Vertonghen this summer so it would be strange for them to let another of their first choice back line go. Who needs a defence anyway eh?
Is the player likely to leave Ajax? Maybe. Will he come to Arsenal? I don’t know, but I know as much as the Mirror who are not able to back up any part of this rumour with fact.
