Despite the disappointment which was caused across Nigeria when Arsenal announced that they were postponing their pre-season tour to the country the Wale Akanni-led Arsenal supporters club in the country has stated its determination to expand and ensure that there is an Arsenal supporters club in every state of the federation.
Akanni, speaking to press in Lagos, stated
Presently we’re in Abuja, Jos, Port Harcourt, Enugu and Lagos making it 15 branches presently and we’re working hard to ensure that the Arsenal Supporters Club, Nigeria gets to every part of the country. Arsenal Football Club of England as you know is a special brand, so we will do everything within our means to ensure that only people with unquestionable character are allowed to register as members.
He then went on to dicuss the reason that the Arsenal tour had been postponed, laying the blame with logistics saying
Arsenal tour of Nigeria was postponed till next summer of 2012/2013 season, millions of naira has been spent on this project and many international and Nigerian-based companies are involved in it but some logistic problems forced the postponement. I want to assure you that come 2012/2013 season Arsenal will definitely be in Nigeria. And to prove to you that the tour has not been cancelled, by next month some officials and players of Arsenal FC will be in the country to participate in some activities and touch on some grey areas that are yet to be finalised.
